Sabah battles obesity and monkey malaria as health crises escalate
Sabah is facing serious health challenges, with high rates of obesity, cholesterol, and sedentary lifestyles among its population. At the same time, the state has reported a rise in monkey malaria cases, with 357 infections and one death in early 2023 alone. Authorities are now focusing on prevention and treatment to tackle these growing concerns. Recent health data reveals alarming trends in Sabah. Over half the population (50.4%) is obese, while 32.1% have high cholesterol. Smoking remains common at 24.9%, and nearly 60% lead inactive lives. These issues contribute to Malaysia’s rising non-communicable disease (NCD) burden, costing the government RM64.3 billion annually.
Monkey malaria has also become a pressing issue. Transmitted by mosquitoes carrying the Plasmodium knowlesi parasite, the disease spreads from monkeys to humans. Ranau, Kudat, and Tawau are the worst-affected districts, with 357 cases and one fatality recorded in the first four months of 2023. Early detection and prompt treatment are critical to controlling the illness. To combat broader health problems, the government has established 38 Wellness Hubs nationwide, including five in Sabah. These centres aim to reduce child stunting and malnutrition. Plans are underway to expand the network, with the goal of placing at least one hub in each parliamentary constituency. Collaboration with the Wildlife and Forestry Departments is also key to curbing monkey malaria outbreaks.
Sabah’s health authorities are working to address both chronic diseases and infectious threats. The Wellness Hubs provide targeted support for nutrition, while cross-agency efforts seek to limit monkey malaria transmission. With ongoing prevention and treatment measures, officials aim to reduce the impact of these health risks on the population.
