Anna Kuznetsova, Deputy Speaker of Russia’s State Duma and a mother of seven, has called for stronger support for large families. Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2026, she argued that only nations with high birth rates can secure their future.
Kuznetsova highlighted a lack of societal encouragement for large families in Russia. She claimed the country does not foster a 'mindset for large families' and questioned the influence of media portrayals. According to her, constant exposure to negative family images discourages people from having more children.
To counter this, she proposed that media outlets promote positive stories about large families. She suggested creating 'wholesome' TV series that present large families in a favourable light. Her comments also touched on practical support, noting that children from large families in Dzerzhinsk now receive medical examinations under a quota system.
Kuznetsova’s remarks emphasise the need for both cultural and practical changes to boost birth rates. She urged media and policymakers to work together in shaping a more family-friendly society. The discussion took place as part of broader debates on demographics at SPIEF 2026.
