Russia's Volga District Medical Center leads breakthroughs in organ transplantation

The Volga District Medical Center (VDMC) has become a leading hub for organ transplantation in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod Region. Since 2009, it has pioneered life-saving procedures, including the area’s first kidney and liver transplants. Now, the centre is set to host a major medical conference on 21 May, gathering top surgeons from around the world. The VDMC’s journey in organ transplantation began in early 2009. In March that year, its team carried out the Nizhny Novgorod Region’s first successful kidney transplant. Just two months later, the centre performed the region’s first liver transplant. These milestones followed the opening of the area’s first dedicated organ transplantation department in Unit No. 1 during the summer of 2009.

That same year, the VDMC also launched an Organ and Tissue Donation Center. A postmortem donor program was introduced to support the growing need for transplants. Organ transplantation remains the only effective treatment for patients with end-stage failure of vital organs, including the liver, kidneys, pancreas, heart, and lungs. Worldwide, thousands of such procedures take place annually.

On 21 May, the VDMC will host the High Technologies in Medicine conference. The event will focus on advancements in organ transplantation, liver surgery, and pancreas operations. Leading surgeons from Germany, the U.S., Belarus, and Russia are expected to attend. A delegation of researchers from Moscow and St. Petersburg’s top medical institutions will also join the discussions. The conference will highlight the VDMC’s role in advancing medical technology and organ transplantation. With a decade of groundbreaking work behind it, the centre continues to expand access to critical treatments. The event aims to share expertise and improve outcomes for patients across the region.
