Russia's New Health Rules Push Childless Women Toward Psychological Counseling
Russia has introduced new health guidelines targeting women aged 18 to 49. Those without plans for children should now be referred to a psychologist for counselling. The recommendation comes from updated reproductive health checkup rules approved earlier this year.
The Ministry of Health's latest guidelines, finalised in February 2026, advise doctors to direct women of reproductive age to psychological support if they express no desire to have children. The policy also extends to women with chronic illnesses, though specifics remain unclear.
Despite the official recommendation, no concrete programmes or funding have been announced to put these measures into practice. Hospitals and clinics have yet to receive instructions on how to implement the psychological referrals.
The guidelines mark a shift in Russia's approach to reproductive health monitoring. Women in the specified age group may now face mandatory counselling sessions if they do not intend to become mothers. However, without clear implementation plans, the policy's real-world impact remains uncertain.
