Russia Expands Organ and Tissue Transplant Rules by 2026

Russia’s Health Ministry has expanded the list of organs and tissues allowed for transplantation. The updated rules will take effect on September 1, 2023, giving patients access to more medical options. Starting this September, Russians will be able to receive skin transplants, including both the epidermis and dermis layers. The ministry has also approved the use of bones, nerves, and spinal cord tissue for future procedures.

This update follows previous expansions of the transplantation list. The latest changes will remain valid until September 1, 2031. However, the inclusion of bones, nerves, and spinal cord tissue will only become available in January 2026.

The new rules broaden treatment possibilities for patients needing complex surgeries. Skin transplants will begin immediately, while other approved tissues will follow in the coming years. The ministry’s decision reflects ongoing efforts to modernise medical care in Russia.
