Russia detects first mpox case amid swift containment efforts
Russian health authorities have confirmed the country's first case of mpox. The infection was detected using domestic test kits developed by Rospotrebnadzor. Officials have moved quickly to contain the situation and prevent further spread.
The infected patient's home has been fully disinfected to remove any traces of the virus. Mpox does not spread through the air but requires close physical contact or exposure to contaminated surfaces. Over 99% of cases outside Africa involve adults over 18, with 97% occurring in men.
All known contacts of the infected person have been placed under a 21-day observation period. They have also been instructed to self-isolate as a precaution. If any symptoms appear, medical assistance will be provided immediately.
Globally, mpox cases have surged in Africa over the past year. More than 50,800 infections were recorded, mainly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and Sierra Leone. Russian authorities have not reported any additional cases beyond this single confirmed infection.
The rapid diagnosis and isolation measures highlight Russia's preparedness for handling mpox. Health officials continue monitoring the situation closely. No further cases have been confirmed in the country so far.
