Revolutionary TULSA Procedure Offers Scar-Free Prostate Cancer Treatment
A new prostate treatment is changing how doctors handle prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The TULSA Procedure, developed by Profound Medical, uses advanced ultrasound technology to target tissue without incisions or radiation. Patients benefit from no blood loss, no overnight hospital stays, and a faster return to daily activities.
The system has already been used in over 100 procedures at Toronto's Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, even though provincial insurance does not yet cover it. Now, the company is expanding its reach in North America and beyond.
The TULSA Procedure works by delivering robotically controlled directional ultrasound to heat prostate tissue. Real-time MRI thermography ensures precise targeting while protecting nearby nerves and structures. This allows for continuous temperature monitoring and adjustments during treatment.
Unlike traditional surgery or radiation, the procedure requires no incisions and is completed in a single session. It can treat virtually all prostate shapes and sizes, reducing common side effects. Patients experience minimal downtime, with no need for overnight hospital stays.
Profound Medical has regained exclusive distribution rights in Canada and plans to increase the system's availability there. In the US, known locations using the TULSA-PRO® system include Integrative Urology in Phoenix and Dallas Medical Center in Texas. The company is also building a direct sales team in North America while partnering with global distributors to expand its market.
Beyond prostate care, Profound Medical's Sonalleve platform holds CE approval for treating uterine fibroids, bone metastases, and other conditions. The company recently received the 2025-2026 Mount Logan Award from INOVAIT for meeting key milestones and gaining international recognition.
The TULSA Procedure offers a faster, less invasive option for prostate disease treatment. With ongoing expansion in Canada and strategic partnerships worldwide, Profound Medical aims to make it a standard choice for patients. The technology's precision and reduced recovery time could reshape prostate care in the coming years.
