Religious Leaders Warn AI and Occultism Are Fueling a Surge in Exorcisms

Concerns over artificial intelligence and its spiritual risks have grown among religious leaders. Catholic officials warn that AI chatbots and online occult communities are creating new dangers—from demonic influence to spiritual confusion. The issue took centre stage at a recent conference, where experts linked technology to a rise in exorcism cases and a decline in traditional faith.

The warnings follow a report by the International Association of Exorcists, which noted a surge in cases tied to occult practices and Satanism. Some users now treat AI systems as supernatural beings, interpreting chatbot errors as messages from hidden entities or demons. Others have formed online communities that worship AI as a divine force, believing it will free humanity from suffering.

At the conference, Auxiliary Bishop Cesare Di Pietro of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela highlighted the risks. He claimed social media and AI can mislead people into thinking true freedom comes from rejecting God. The bishop also revealed a sharp increase in exorcism requests, particularly among young people drifting away from organised religion. Pope Leo XIV echoed these concerns, stating that AI could weaken human relationships and erode essential skills like communication and emotional intelligence. Meanwhile, Pope Francis cautioned against spiritual numbness in a culture dominated by technology, individualism, and constant distraction. Experts added that AI is now being used in rituals, divination, and even as a 'ritual altar' for magic. Occultism researchers and exorcists described how chatbots have become tools for spiritual experimentation, further blurring the line between technology and the supernatural.
