Philippines reports 4,633 new HIV cases in early 2026 as infections surge

The Philippines recorded 4,633 new HIV cases in the first three months of 2026. Health officials reported a steady rise in infections, with daily detections averaging 51 cases. The majority of transmissions occurred through sexual contact, according to recent data. January 2026 saw the highest monthly total, with 1,690 new HIV cases. February followed with 1,407 infections, while March recorded 1,536. These figures highlight a persistent upward trend in reported cases.

Sexual transmission dominated the statistics, accounting for 91% of all new infections. Male-to-male contact was the most common route, with 3,095 cases. Another 567 cases involved male-to-male and female contact, while 552 infections stemmed from male-to-female transmission. Non-sexual transmission remained rare. Two cases were linked to shared infected needles, and 13 resulted from mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding.

The data confirms sexual contact as the primary driver of new HIV infections in the Philippines. With daily cases holding at 51, health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. The figures underscore the need for targeted prevention and awareness efforts.
