Philippines doubles maternity benefits to ensure safer, affordable childbirth
The Philippines has rolled out a major expansion of maternity benefits to improve access to safer and more affordable childbirth. The changes, which took effect on 30 April 2023, form part of the country’s broader push to strengthen universal healthcare under the Universal Health Care Act. Officials aim to ensure essential services reach all Filipinos, particularly the most vulnerable families. Under the new scheme, PhilHealth coverage for normal hospital deliveries has jumped from ₱9,750 to ₱29,000. For cesarean sections, the support has risen even more sharply—from ₱37,000 to between ₱58,000 and ₱62,000. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. highlighted that the increased amounts could now cover the full cost of delivery, even in some private hospitals for mothers in standard ward rooms.
Prenatal care has also been expanded. The number of recommended check-ups has doubled from four to eight, with vaccines and laboratory tests now included. After delivery, mothers are entitled to three follow-up consultations to monitor their recovery and their newborn’s health.
The changes address a persistent issue: many women have avoided hospital births due to high expenses. By raising coverage levels, the government hopes to reduce financial barriers and encourage safer deliveries in medical facilities. The enhanced benefits mark a significant step in the Philippines’ efforts to improve maternal health. With higher coverage for both normal and cesarean births, more families can now access necessary care without facing crippling costs. The initiative aligns with the country’s ongoing commitment to universal healthcare for all citizens.
