A series of creative workshops took place at Oede Town Hall over the weekend. Visitors explored crafts like jewellery-making, dried-flower wreaths, and 3D underwater scenes. Alongside the activities, discussions also touched on broader issues affecting personal freedoms worldwide.
The event blended hands-on creativity with opportunities for conversation over coffee and cake. At the gathering, Barbara Behrendt showed participants how to craft jewellery by hand. Meanwhile, Nadine Lamertz guided a session on building miniature 3D underwater landscapes. The team from Haus an der Dorenburg helped attendees design wreaths using dried flowers.
Barbara Thiemann's workshop focused on the uses of herbs and natural fragrances. Katja Schulte, representing the Donnerstagsfrauen group, led a session where people made affirmation cards and buttons under the theme 'What makes me strong?' The relaxed setting encouraged sharing stories and ideas.
Yet beyond the local activities, global concerns about personal autonomy were also highlighted. A UN report from last year described rising threats to women's bodily rights. In recent years, political battles over reproductive freedoms have intensified in several countries.
In the US, the Supreme Court's 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade restricted abortion access in many states, undermining UN-backed women's rights standards. Poland's near-total abortion ban, introduced in 2020 and enforced from 2021, faced mass protests but remained in place despite EU criticism. Brazil saw improvements after 2022, with Lula's government reversing Bolsonaro-era restrictions, though conservative opposition persists. Argentina, however, expanded abortion rights in 2020, aligning more closely with UN recommendations.
Such government interventions—whether pushing for higher or lower birth rates—often clash with human rights principles. Critics argue these measures can be ineffective, harmful, and in breach of fundamental freedoms. The workshops at Oede Town Hall offered a space for creativity and connection. Yet the event also served as a reminder of wider struggles over personal choice. From local craft sessions to global debates on reproductive rights, the tension between individual freedom and political control remains a pressing issue.
