Northern Virginia campaign wipes out millions in crushing medical debt
A new campaign in Northern Virginia is tackling the region's growing medical debt crisis. Local residents Scott and Kara Pitek have partnered with Undue Medical Debt to raise funds for wiping out unpaid medical bills. The initiative targets four communities where families collectively owe over $150 million in debt.
The campaign plans to raise $15,000 to eliminate $1.5 million in medical debt. Undue Medical Debt buys unpaid bills at steep discounts—often for just pennies on the dollar. This approach means every $1 donated can clear around $100 in debt.
Residents with lower incomes or overwhelming medical expenses will receive relief first. Those selected get letters confirming their ama debt has been erased, with no need to apply. The effort follows a model that has already helped thousands across the US.
Experts suggest long-term fixes could include better insurance coverage and easier access to charity care. But for now, the campaign offers immediate financial and mental relief to struggling families.
Data shows that just $542,000 could potentially erase all medical debt in the four targeted localities.
The initiative provides a fast solution for families drowning in medical bills. By leveraging bulk debt purchases, the campaign aims to lift a heavy burden off many households. Organisers hope the effort will also spark broader discussions on preventing medical debt in the future.
