Many Norovirus Infections at the Start of the Year in the North - Norovirus outbreaks spike in Schleswig-Holstein as hygiene warnings intensify

Norovirus infections have surged in Schleswig-Holstein at the start of 2025. In the first five weeks alone, 482 cases were reported—well above the 307 recorded during the same period last year. Health officials are now urging stricter hygiene measures to curb the spread of the highly contagious virus.

The virus spreads rapidly, particularly in crowded settings like daycare centres, nursing homes, and hospitals. Tom Ackermann, CEO of AOK, warned that norovirus is extremely contagious and often leads to outbreaks where large groups gather. Symptoms include severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea, with young children and the elderly facing the highest risks.

During the coronavirus pandemic, reported norovirus cases dropped sharply, falling below 1,000 each year from 2020 to 2022. However, infections rebounded in 2024, with Schleswig-Holstein recording 2,367 cases. This year, the total has slightly decreased to 2,285, though the early 2025 spike has raised concerns.

Since no vaccine exists, prevention relies on strict hygiene. The AOK stresses thorough handwashing with soap as the most effective defence. Those infected must also isolate for at least two days after symptoms disappear to avoid passing the virus to others.

The recent rise in norovirus cases highlights the need for vigilance in hygiene practices. With no vaccine available, handwashing and isolation remain the key tools to limit transmission. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as the year progresses.
