A cluttered room with wooden walls displaying framed photos, a coat on a hanger, scattered clothing, a bag, a box, a bottle, a potted plant, and a lamp on tables, alongside a board with text on the right and a wooden box with objects and a cloth on a stool on the left, part of New York Fashion Week.

New trauma center for women opens with 200 beds and healing design

A new intake centre for women experiencing trauma has opened at 114 Snediker Ave. The 60,000-square-foot facility is the first of its kind in the city, designed specifically to support women in crisis. Officials say it will offer comfort and safety from the moment they arrive. The centre features 200 beds for temporary stays, giving women a place to rest before moving to longer-term shelters. Each floor is decorated in soft pastel colours, creating a calm atmosphere. Private bedrooms and plenty of natural light help make the space feel welcoming.

A large mural greets visitors in the spacious entryway. The design choices aim to ease stress and provide a sense of care. Deputy Mayor Helen Arteaga, who oversees health and human services, explained that the goal is for every woman to feel supported as soon as she walks through the door. The facility focuses on offering immediate relief. Staff will assist with relocations to other shelters after their short-term stay.

The new centre provides a dedicated space for women in difficult situations. Its design and services are tailored to offer security and comfort during a crisis. Women arriving at the facility will have access to temporary housing and further support.
