New study tests palm fruit extract to soothe dogs' itchy skin and dull coats
A new clinical study will test whether PetGaia, a palm fruit extract, can improve skin and coat health in dogs. The eight-week trial, conducted in Malaysia, aims to gather scientific evidence on the supplement's effects. Up to 20% of dogs in European veterinary practices suffer from itching and related skin issues, making this research particularly relevant for pet owners.
PhytoGaia, a Malaysian company specialising in palm-derived phytonutrients, has partnered with a local contract research organisation for the study. The firm, which supplies the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC), developed PetGaia using a non-chemical extraction process. The supplement contains tocotrienols, alpha-tocopherol, plant-derived squalene, and phytosterols—compounds linked in prior research to skin and hair benefits.
The trial will monitor dogs receiving PetGaia for improvements in skin redness, dryness, itchiness, and lesion formation. Researchers will also assess coat shine, softness, shedding, and smoothness. Dr. Ariati Aris, PhytoGaia's scientific affairs specialist, explained that the goal is to produce robust data for product claims and future development.
Earlier studies in humans showed that oral tocotrienols boosted hair count, scalp health, and reduced skin reactions. Rodent research further suggested that dietary tocotrienols protect skin from oxidative damage and aid hair follicle regeneration. Bryan See, PhytoGaia's vice president, cited his own experience with dogs suffering from sensitive skin as motivation for backing the project.
The findings could provide dog owners with a scientifically supported option for managing common skin and coat problems. If successful, PetGaia may join PhytoGaia's existing range of supplements, which already includes MCTGaia. The study's results will determine whether the extract delivers measurable benefits for dogs.
