New Study Questions the Benefits of Calcium and Vitamin D Supplements for Bone Health
A new study published in the British Medical Journal challenges the long-held belief that calcium and vitamin D supplements prevent bone fractures and falls. The research reviewed data from nearly 154,000 participants and found little evidence to support routine supplementation. Experts now suggest that current recommendations may need revisiting for those not at high risk. The study analysed 69 trials involving 153,902 people, most of whom were not considered high-risk for fractures or falls. Results showed no clear benefits from calcium, vitamin D, or combined supplements in reducing these incidents. Olivier Massé, one of the study’s authors, noted that these findings match recent research questioning the effectiveness of routine supplementation.
David Goltzman, a professor at McGill University, added that many people remain unaware of their vitamin D status, which can vary with the seasons. He explained that those already sufficient in vitamin D may not need extra supplements. Instead, he recommended regular exercise and a diet rich in vitamin D and calcium to maintain bone health. Massé also highlighted that other potential strategies, such as dietary changes and education, remain understudied. While supplements may not be the answer, further research could explore alternative ways to prevent fractures and falls. He noted that once a fracture occurs or a diagnosis is made, more targeted interventions might be necessary.
The study’s findings suggest that calcium and vitamin D supplements may not be as beneficial as once thought for preventing fractures and falls. With routine supplementation now in question, future research could focus on other methods, including diet and education. For now, experts advise maintaining healthy levels through natural sources and physical activity.
