New Maternal-Fetal Health Institute Offers Lifeline for High-Risk Pregnancies

Nemours Children’s Health has opened a new centre to support families facing complex fetal diagnoses. The Institute for Maternal Fetal Health offers specialised care for high-risk pregnancies and deliveries. Its launch comes as maternal health remains a critical issue across the US. The institute provides a full range of services under one roof. This includes a fetal care centre for early diagnosis, an advanced delivery unit for high-risk births, and a psychosocial support programme. The delivery unit has four dedicated labour-delivery-recovery-postpartum rooms and eight additional rooms for mothers needing extended care after complicated births.

Julie Moldenhauer, the institute’s executive director, described the approach as multimodal. Families receive personalised care plans, mental health support, and coordinated medical treatment. The model also aims to be financially sustainable through partnerships with referring doctors and streamlined care methods. Maternal health challenges in the US remain severe. The country’s maternal mortality rate exceeds that of many other high-income nations. Preventable factors, including suicide, contribute significantly to these deaths. Moldenhauer has urged clinical leaders to tackle the issue by improving healthcare literacy, expanding access to services, and strengthening mental health support for mothers.
