New British Standard Ensures Better-Fitting PPE for Women at Work

A new British Standard has been introduced to improve the fit of personal protective equipment (PPE) for women in the workplace. The move comes after years of female engineers reporting difficulties with ill-fitting gear designed primarily for men. Now, companies like Zurich Engineering are taking steps to address the issue with tailored solutions. Zurich Engineering has rolled out a full range of women-specific PPE, including 3-in-1 jackets, hi-vis clothing, trousers, and safety harnesses. The company has also partnered with a specialist supplier to ensure all female colleagues receive properly fitting equipment.

Beyond fit, the firm is prioritising sustainability. New hi-vis vests are being made from recycled plastic bottles, while safety glasses are produced using recycled fishing nets. These changes form part of a broader effort to enhance workplace safety and inclusivity.

The initiative follows the British Standards Institution (BSI) launching a new standard aimed at closing the gender PPE gap. The goal is to eliminate safety risks caused by equipment that does not account for women’s measurements or needs. The updated PPE range reflects Zurich Engineering’s commitment to better workplace protection. By combining improved fit with eco-friendly materials, the company is setting a new benchmark for safety and sustainability. The changes are expected to benefit female engineers who have long faced challenges with standard-issue equipment.
