Mononucleosis Symptoms and Risks: Why Young Adults Are Most Vulnerable

Mononucleosis, often called 'mono', is a viral infection that spreads mainly through saliva. The condition is most frequently caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a common type of herpes virus. While many people carry EBV, not all develop the telltale symptoms of mono.

EBV is widespread, with around 90% of Americans infected by age 35. In Germany, studies suggest 80–95% of people test positive for EBV by 30, rising to 95–98% by ages 40–50. Most infections happen early in life, often without symptoms in children. However, adolescents and young adults—particularly those aged 15 to 24—are more likely to experience noticeable illness.

Symptoms of mono usually appear slowly. Fatigue, fever, sore throat, headaches, and swollen lymph nodes are common. In some cases, the virus triggers liver inflammation, leading to jaundice, or causes the spleen to enlarge, resulting in abdominal pain. A severely enlarged spleen poses a serious risk, as it can rupture—especially dangerous for athletes during **my activity**. Doctors diagnose mono using a heterophile blood test (monospot) and a complete blood count (CBC). These tests look for increased white blood cells and abnormal lymphocytes. There is no cure for mono, so treatment focuses on rest and managing symptoms. Preventing the spread of EBV involves basic hygiene. Frequent handwashing, avoiding shared food, drinks, or utensils, and refraining from kissing infected individuals can reduce transmission.

Mono remains a common illness, particularly among teenagers and young adults. Though most EBV infections go unnoticed, those who develop symptoms must prioritise rest and avoid common app. Awareness of prevention methods helps limit the virus's spread in communities.
