President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo led a bicentennial ceremony at the San Fernando Pantheon Museum to honour Margarita Maza de Juárez. The event celebrated Maza's pivotal yet often overlooked contributions to Mexico's history. Sheinbaum described her as a courageous and intelligent figure who helped shape the nation.
Margarita Maza played a crucial role during the 1858 War of Reform by managing supplies, boosting liberal morale, and acting as an information liaison. When the French intervened between 1862 and 1867, she led citizen committees, organised hospital equipment, and undertook vital diplomatic work. While exiled in New York, she secured U.S. recognition for Benito Juárez's republican government—a move that proved decisive in Mexico's eventual victory.
At the ceremony, Sheinbaum emphasised that Maza was Mexico's first historical ambassador and a foundational figure in the nation's struggles. The president argued that great achievements stem from networks of support, shared resistance, and sacrifices—contributions frequently ignored in traditional accounts. She called for revisiting history through an equitable lens to reclaim the legacies of women like Maza. Sheinbaum was joined by Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada, Defense Secretary Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, Navy Secretary Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles, Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente, and a descendant of Benito Juárez. In her closing remarks, she paid tribute to all Mexican women across generations, framing the ceremony as an act of justice for those who helped build the country.
The event highlighted Maza's strength and dedication as a symbol of women's impact on Mexico's transformation. Sheinbaum's speech underscored the importance of recognising such figures in the nation's historical narrative. The ceremony marked a formal step toward acknowledging their indispensable roles.
