Measles exposure warnings issued after NYC case linked to international travel

A confirmed case of measles in New York City has prompted exposure warnings at several locations. An unvaccinated adult, who recently travelled internationally, tested positive for the virus after visiting public venues in Manhattan. Health officials have traced their movements to a theatre performance, two restaurants, and medical facilities.

This brings the city’s total measles cases to five this year, all linked to international travel.

The infected individual attended a matinee of La Bohème at the Metropolitan Opera House on April 25. The Met Opera responded by emailing ticket holders who may have been exposed. They were able to contact attendees directly, as purchase records provided their details.

The person also dined at Norma, an Italian restaurant in Hell’s Kitchen, and another unnamed Manhattan eatery. Unlike the Met, Norma lacked customer contact information and instead posted a general alert on Instagram. The infected adult additionally visited healthcare facilities in the borough, though specific locations were not disclosed. Measles symptoms typically appear 11 to 12 days after exposure. The virus can spread up to four days before a rash develops, making early detection difficult. City health officials chose not to issue a widespread public alert, citing low overall risk and the venues’ ability to notify affected individuals. Statewide, New York has recorded 10 measles cases in 2024. This includes an unvaccinated child under five in Nassau County, though the city’s cases remain tied to international travel.

The latest case highlights the ongoing risk of measles linked to global travel. Venues like the Met Opera and Norma have taken steps to inform visitors of potential exposure. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation but have not raised broader alarms at this stage.
