Malaysia's tuberculosis cases surge to 2,571 in early 2026

Malaysia has recorded 2,571 tuberculosis (TB) cases so far this year. Health officials have highlighted a steady rise in detections, with 503 new cases reported by Epidemiological Week 5 in 2026. The Ministry of Health (MOH) is now urging the public to take precautions and seek early screening if symptoms appear.

Sabah reported the highest number of TB cases at 614, making it the most affected state. Selangor followed with 476 cases, while Sarawak, Johor, and Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya recorded 257, 233, and 202 cases respectively.

Penang saw 148 cases, closely trailed by Kedah with 144. Perak reported 127 cases, Kelantan 96, and Pahang 81. Terengganu had 60 cases, Negeri Sembilan 58, and Melaka 42. Perlis and Labuan recorded the lowest figures, with 17 and 16 cases respectively.

The MOH has advised people to practise good cough and sneeze etiquette during the festive season and long holidays. Wearing face masks in crowded places was also recommended to reduce transmission risks. Those experiencing persistent coughs, fever, unexplained weight loss, or loss of appetite were encouraged to visit the nearest health facility for screening.

The total number of TB cases now stands at 2,571 nationwide. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and stress the importance of early detection. Preventive measures, such as mask-wearing and proper hygiene, remain key to controlling the spread of the disease.
