Malaysia launches task force to combat doctor shortages in public hospitals

The Ministry of Health has formed a special task force to tackle critical shortages of doctors and medical specialists across its 151 hospitals. This move comes as the ministry prepares to challenge proposed budget cuts of RM5.4 billion in healthcare operational spending. The newly established Interministerial Special Task Force will focus on improving incentives for medical officers. Among the proposals under review are relocation allowances, particularly for those willing to work in Sabah. The group will also examine strategies to retain talent within the national healthcare system.

The task force will work closely with several key agencies, including the Ministry of Higher Education, the Public Service Department, and the Ministry of Finance. Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad has set a clear timeline for developing and finalising solutions to address these workforce gaps. The initiative follows the Ministry of Finance’s suggestion to reduce operational spending in both healthcare and higher education. In response, the Ministry of Health is preparing a counter-proposal to safeguard its budget and ensure adequate resources for public health services.

The task force aims to present concrete solutions to ease staffing shortages in public hospitals. Its recommendations will shape future policies on incentives, recruitment, and budget allocation. The ministry’s counter-proposal on funding cuts is expected to be submitted shortly.
