Major surgical wing expansion completed at Hospital zum Heiligen Geist

Hospital zum Heiligen Geist has completed a major expansion of its surgical wing. The new facility adds four operating rooms and modernises critical infrastructure. Officials say the upgrade will improve care across multiple medical specialties.

The hospital repurposed the former intensive care unit to build the new surgical wing. The expansion covers 670 square meters on the ground floor and 630 square meters in the basement. Inside, there are now two large operating rooms (each 45 square meters) and two smaller ones (each 35 square meters).

The smaller rooms include dedicated patient changing areas, making them well-suited for outpatient news. All operating spaces feature advanced ventilation and safety technology. The entire suite also received a new electrical distribution system and backup emergency power.

Maria Henk, the hospital's managing director, described the project as a strategic investment in future patient care. The expansion aligns with North Rhine-Westphalia's hospital plan, helping the facility meet its healthcare obligations more effectively. Surgical teams specialising in spinal, urological, orthopaedic, general, vein, dermatologic, ENT, gynaecological, and pelvic floor procedures will now have greater operating capacity.

The upgraded surgical wing provides more space and modern equipment for a wide range of procedures. With improved infrastructure and additional rooms, the hospital can handle higher patient news. No details have been released about changes to robot-assisted surgeries at this stage.
