Maimonides Medical Center merges with Health+Hospitals to escape financial crisis

Maimonides Medical Center is set to merge with Health+Hospitals, a move aimed at easing its long-standing financial troubles. The deal, announced late last year, is expected to complete by April 1. Leaders hope it will stabilize the hospital's finances while keeping its operations independent.

Maimonides has struggled for years with deep financial problems. Operating losses and heavy debt have forced cuts to services, delayed upgrades, and limited staffing. These issues have made it harder for Brooklyn residents—especially in South Brooklyn—to access specialized care.

The hospital's leadership has spent years searching for a merger partner. Past talks included discussions with Northwell Health, but no agreement was reached. Now, the deal with Health+Hospitals promises a way forward.

At a City Council oversight hearing on March 2, Dr. Mitchell Katz, CEO of Health+Hospitals, spoke on behalf of both organizations. The merger aims to improve care quality while protecting Maimonides' autonomy.

The merger will bring much-needed financial stability to Maimonides. It follows years of budget deficits and service reductions that have impacted vulnerable communities. If finalized by the April 1 deadline, the partnership could help restore access to critical healthcare in Brooklyn.
