Magadan celebrates women's achievements through inspiring lectures and dialogues

Our website, March 6 – Ahead of International Women's Day, the Znanie (Knowledge) Society is hosting a series of inspiring lectures and open dialogues dedicated to the contributions of women throughout history—in science, art, aviation, sports, and beyond. These stories of extraordinary resilience, talent, and determination show how women change the world, serving as powerful role models for new generations.

"Our lectures aren't just about history—they're about values," shared Anna Golubeva, director of the Russian Znanie Society's regional branch. "Nearly 500 young people in our region have learned that success isn't defined by gender but by hard work, character, and passion for what you do. Of course, we honored our legendary fellow townswoman, Yelena Välbe, whose name is in the Guinness Book of World Records and whose ties to her hometown remain strong."

Golubeva noted that in 1989, at just 21, Välbe was awarded the title Honorary Citizen of Magadan for her outstanding athletic achievements. Today, the region hosts annual cross-country skiing competitions in her name—Välbe's Trail.

A highlight of the spring program was a meeting at Magadan Industrial College led by Yelena Tachenko, chief expert at the Russian Youth Center. She spoke to students about the evolving role of women in Russian history and discussed the image of the modern, successful woman.

At the Cultural Center, Daniil Somov, a leading specialist at the Youth Center, hosted an interactive session exploring the qualities that help women reach new heights, while paying tribute to the heroines who brought glory to the nation.

Artem Balasanyan, an associate professor of law at Northeast State University, focused his lecture on historical figures whose achievements defined their eras. Attendees learned about the first women officers, diplomats, and scientists in Russia.

Margarita Shevchenko, deputy director for educational work at the College of Service and Technology, drew on the lives of trailblazers like cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova and figure skater Irina Rodnina to illustrate how perseverance and self-belief can overcome any obstacle.

The lectures also reached students at the Ola branch of Magadan Polytechnic College and young readers at the Magadan Regional Children's Library. The series will continue on March 10 with a talk by Deputy Director Alexey Alexandrov at Magadan College of the Arts.

The events are part of the national project Youth and Children.
