Flu and Stomach Bug: Hospitals Impose Visitor Ban - Lusatia hospitals impose strict visitor bans amid flu and gastrointestinal outbreaks

Two hospitals in Lusatia have stopped most visits due to a sharp rise in viral infections. The surge includes severe outbreaks of gastrointestinal illnesses and influenza A. Both facilities now allow entry only in urgent cases and by prior agreement.

The Lusatia Clinic in Forst introduced restricted visiting hours on January 30, with measures lasting until February 6. Meanwhile, the Naemi Wilke Diakonie Hospital in Guben imposed a full visitor ban on the same day, extending it through February 7. Despite the restrictions, patients can still receive personal items on the wards.

Medical experts warn that those recovering from illness may remain contagious for days after symptoms fade. To limit further spread, they urge stronger hand hygiene and reduced contact with infected individuals.

Earlier this year, Brandenburg reported outbreaks of avian influenza in several districts between January and February 2026. However, no data links these cases to the current rise in gastrointestinal or flu infections in Lusatia.

The visitor bans remain in place at both hospitals, with exceptions granted only in critical situations. Health officials continue to monitor the outbreaks while advising the public to follow preventive measures. The restrictions will be reviewed as the infection rates develop.
