Lisbon hospital steps in after obstetrics unit closure forces emergency transfers

Two expectant mothers were rushed to Lisbon’s Alfredo da Costa Maternity Hospital early on Tuesday. The move came after Amadora-Sintra Hospital shut its obstetrics emergency unit. By mid-morning, one of them had given birth to a baby still waiting for a name. The women arrived at Alfredo da Costa after their original hospital could no longer handle emergency births. Staff quickly prepared for their care in room six. Between 5 am and 11 am, the first baby was delivered.

Susana and Joana, both nurses and mothers themselves, were among the team assisting. Their work reflects a wider challenge in Portugal’s healthcare system. Many professionals like them are pushing for better conditions to manage their careers and family lives.

The newborn remains unnamed for now. Meanwhile, the hospital continues to support mothers affected by the closure of nearby services. Nurses and doctors are also calling for changes to improve their work-life balance.
