Legendary epidemiologist Nattela Tkavadze celebrates 85 years of life and service

Nattela Tkavadze, a respected epidemiologist in Russia’s Magadan Region, marked her 85th birthday on May 8. Born in Novorossiysk in 1941, she has dedicated over 50 years to public health in the remote Kolyma area. Colleagues and officials gathered to honour her long career and contributions.

Tkavadze graduated from Rostov State Medical University before moving to the Magadan Oblast half a century ago. Since then, she has worked tirelessly in the region’s healthcare system. Today, she leads a department at the Magadan Regional Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology while continuing her work as an epidemiologist.

Her achievements have earned her multiple honours, including Excellence in Healthcare, Veteran of Labor, and the title of Honored Healthcare Professional of Magadan. The region’s State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service has also recognised her as an Honored Worker. Dmitry Borovikov, chief physician of the regional hygiene centre, joined in celebrating her milestone. Meanwhile, Dmitry Shapovalov, a member of the Kolyma Regional Parliament, presented Tkavadze with a commemorative address on behalf of Anatoly Shirokov, Chairman of the Magadan Oblast Duma. The address highlighted her role in safeguarding public health and guiding younger physicians. Shapovalov also handed her a gift from the regional legislature.

Tkavadze’s birthday was marked by tributes from both medical professionals and lawmakers. The commemorative address and gift underscore her lasting impact on Magadan’s healthcare system. Her career continues to influence both policy and practice in the region.
