Landmark Yakut biblical dictionary bridges faith and indigenous scholarship

A landmark publication in the Yakut language was unveiled on November 17, 2025. The Explanatory Theological Dictionary of Biblical Terms in the Yakut Language marks a significant moment for indigenous scholarship. The event drew high-profile attendees, including the Head of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Aisen Nikolayev, and Alexander Fyodorov, the region’s permanent representative to the Russian president. The dictionary is the first of its kind in Russian linguistics for an indigenous language. Its development spanned several years, led by the Yakutsk Diocese’s translation department and a team of leading scholars. Archbishop Roman of Yakutsk and Lensk oversaw the project, which also underwent rigorous academic peer review.

The presentation took place under Archbishop Roman’s guidance, who blessed the publication and highlighted its importance. He stressed the need for translating Scripture and expanding theological literature in Yakut. The work was supported by Nikolayev and endorsed by the Institute of Humanities Research and Indigenous Minorities of the North. The event also commemorated a historical milestone: 170 years ago, the Holy Synod first allowed the printing of liturgical books and Scripture in Yakut. This decision laid the foundation for Yakut-language publishing. Today, audio recordings of Yakut-language publications, including the new dictionary, are accessible on the Institute for Bible Translation’s website.

The dictionary stands as a unique resource for Yakut speakers and scholars. Its release reflects ongoing efforts to preserve and develop indigenous languages in Russia. The project’s completion was made possible through collaboration between religious, academic, and governmental bodies.
