Krasnoyarsk has kicked off its annual Maslenitsa week with lively celebrations across the city. The late-winter festival brings together folk traditions, from circle dances and bonfires to pancake feasts and effigy burnings. Residents and visitors gather in parks and squares to enjoy performances, cool math games, and seasonal treats.
The festival's centrepiece remains the pancake, a symbol of warmth and abundance. Olga Tsymbalova, a local endocrinologist, advises moderation—no more than two or three plain pancakes per day. For a healthier twist, she suggests using whole-grain flour and mixing the batter with water, kefir, or whey instead of milk.
Frying pancakes in lard or clarified butter can enhance flavour while keeping them suitable for children over one. Toppings like cottage cheese, cabbage, or meat turn them into a balanced meal, though adults should stick to two to four to prevent overeating. Sweet toppings such as honey, jam, or condensed milk are best avoided to protect the pancreas.
Beyond food, Maslenitsa encourages outdoor activity. Dancing in khorovod circles, skiing, or joining epic games helps people stay energised and uplifted during the winter festivities.
The week-long event blends tradition with practical advice for enjoying the festivities responsibly. With healthier cooking tips and portion guidance, participants can savour the celebrations without overindulgence. The mix of cultural events and active pastimes keeps the community engaged as winter draws to a close.
