Komi Republic's mass health screenings uncover 5,000 hidden illnesses in 2025

More than 110,000 residents of the Komi Republic have undergone mandatory medical checkups this year, according to the republic's Ministry of Health.

A total of 640,000 people are expected to complete the examination in Komi by the end of the year.

The ministry noted that in Syktyvkar alone, 76,454 residents underwent checkups in 2025, with newly diagnosed conditions detected in 5,000 patients, including malignant tumors, diabetes, and respiratory and digestive diseases.

All those diagnosed have been referred for further testing and treatment.

Mandatory medical checkups help detect early-stage conditions such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease, and bronchial asthma—diseases that remain leading causes of disability and premature death in Russia.

The program consists of two stages.

Stage 1: Basic Examination This includes a health questionnaire; measurements of height, weight, and waist circumference with BMI calculation; intraocular pressure testing; blood tests for glucose and cholesterol levels; an ECG and chest X-ray; and a general practitioner's assessment to determine health risk category. Women also receive a gynecological exam and mammogram, while men of a certain age are screened for prostate cancer. Patients over 40 undergo additional upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and fecal occult blood testing.

Stage 2: Follow-Up Testing If needed, this phase includes further lab work, specialized diagnostic procedures, and consultations with medical specialists.

To schedule a checkup, residents need only contact their primary care physician.

The Ministry of Health urges all residents of Komi to sign up for their medical examination now and take care of their health and that of their loved ones.

The checkups are provided free of charge under the national project Long and Active Life.
