Jesy Nelson's raw fight to save her twins from a deadly diagnosis
Jesy Nelson has announced a new TV documentary about her twins, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, who were diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). The former Little Mix star revealed that doctors warned the children may not live beyond two years old. Despite this, she has continued filming to raise awareness of the condition.
Nelson is now campaigning for SMA to be included in the newborn heel prick test, hoping her story will push for change.
The singer shared the news of her documentary on Thursday, explaining that she wanted to highlight the challenges families face with SMA. Even after learning of her twins' prognosis, she chose to keep filming, believing the project could make a difference.
Nelson has also spoken openly about her recent split from the children's father, Zion Foster. Her focus, however, remains on securing better screening for SMA at birth.
Her campaign has already gained high-profile support. UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting publicly backed her petition, calling her efforts brave and important. But while officials are working to expand a current trial—covering two-thirds of newborns—the results won't be ready until January 2028. Plans to speed up the process and include all babies are now under discussion.
Despite the grim outlook, Nelson remains hopeful. She believes early treatment could help her twins defy expectations and live longer, healthier lives.
The documentary aims to put pressure on health authorities to add SMA to the standard heel prick test. With Streeting's endorsement and growing public attention, the campaign has gained momentum. A decision on nationwide screening will depend on the trial's findings, though officials are exploring ways to bring the timeline forward.
