Jazzercise founder Judi Sheppard Missett still dances daily at 80

Judi Sheppard Missett, now in her 80s, still dances every day—over 50 years after founding Jazzercise. The fitness programme she created in 1969 has since grown into a global brand with thousands of la fitness classes. Despite her age, she remains deeply involved, teaching sessions and designing new routines.

Her journey began with a simple idea: making exercise enjoyable for women who found workouts tedious. Today, Jazzercise spans more than 2,000 locations worldwide, serving tens of thousands of customers annually.

Missett launched Jazzercise in Los Angeles in 1969, blending dance with fitness. The first class attracted 15 participants, but within three sessions, attendance quadrupled to 60, forcing a move to a larger space. By 1976, the programme had expanded to over 100 classes across 10 US states, spreading first through California, then Arizona, Colorado, and beyond.

The franchise model drove rapid growth, reaching the Midwest and East Coast by the mid-1970s. Last year alone, Jazzercise generated $77 million (€70.9 million) in revenue, with over 55,000 customers in the US.

Missett's approach to fitness and nutrition is balanced but disciplined. She prioritises protein and leafy greens while allowing small treats, like her daily Dr Pepper. Her routine includes weightlifting, long walks, and, of course, dancing—habits she credits for her enduring energy.

Family plays a key role in the business. Her daughter now serves as CEO and head choreographer, while her granddaughter works as an instructor. Missett's relaxed yet active lifestyle reflects her belief in sustainable fitness, proving that movement can remain a lifelong passion.

Jazzercise continues to thrive under Missett's influence, with thousands of classes worldwide. Her hands-on involvement, from teaching to choreography, keeps the brand dynamic. The programme's success shows how a simple idea—making exercise fun—can grow into a lasting global movement.
