Hundreds of Hantavirus Vials Vanish as Deadly Cruise Ship Outbreak Spreads Globally

Hundreds of dangerous pathogen samples, including 323 vials of hantavirus, have vanished from a Queensland laboratory. The missing vials were initially thought to have been moved to a new freezer at the public health virology laboratory. The incident comes as a hantavirus outbreak on the *MV Hondius* cruise ship has infected seven people, three of whom died. Argentina has also reported 101 cases this season, with seven linked to the ship. Despite the timing, Australian authorities insist the missing laboratory samples are unrelated to the cruise ship outbreak. Certain hantavirus strains carry a high fatality rate, with mortality reaching up to 15%. The simultaneous disappearance of the vials and the cruise ship outbreak has heightened scrutiny of biosecurity measures.
