How Fallout's Centaurs Became the Wasteland's Most Terrifying Mythical Creatures

In the Fallout universe, centaurs, monstrous hybrids born from twisted experiments, are found. These mythical creatures blend human and animal traits, created using the Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV). Their origins trace back to the Master, a powerful figure who conducted gruesome tests on the West Coast of the U.S.

The Master first developed centaurs at the Mariposa Military Base. By fusing humans with animals like dogs or cats, he produced grotesque beings, often with two heads—one human, one animal. These early versions became the most common type encountered in the wasteland.

Later, Super Mutants on the East Coast, particularly in Vault 87, began creating their own centaurs. Unlike the two-headed variants, some had a single head, muscular torsos, and grotesque growths sprouting from their backs. Over time, a few of these creatures migrated from the East Coast to the West Coast, spreading their presence across the ruins of America.

More advanced centaurs emerged as well. Larger and stronger than their predecessors, these variants could rival Super Mutants in combat. In Fallout 2, elite types like recon and ghost centaurs appeared near the Military Base in Gecko and the Enclave Oil Rig. Fallout Tactics introduced even more mutated forms, such as chieftain centaurs, found in missions like the Super Mutant base near Jefferson and the Marauders' stronghold in Kansas.

Despite their horrific nature, centaur meat is sought after by some wastelanders. Those who consume it are often labelled cannibals, given the creatures' partial human origins.

Centaurs remain one of the most disturbing results of FEV experimentation in the Fallout series. They appear as enemies across multiple games, from the original West Coast variants to the heavily mutated types on the East Coast. Their existence serves as a grim reminder of the horrors unleashed by unchecked scientific ambition.
