Germany's First Surgical Robot Debuts at Wolfsburg Hospital for Precision Spine Surgery
Wolfsburg Municipal Hospital has become the first in Germany to introduce the Loop-X imaging robot combined with Curve navigation technology. The near-€1 million system aims to transform surgical precision, particularly in spine operations. Hospital leaders hope the investment will also draw young medical professionals to the region. The new technology generates real-time 2D and 3D scans during surgery, allowing surgeons to place screws and implants with greater accuracy. Linked to navigation systems, it supports minimally invasive techniques, reducing risks for patients. Procedures are expected to take less time, with lower blood loss and reduced radiation exposure for everyone in the operating room.
The system's mobility means it can be moved between different theatres, increasing flexibility. While spine surgery will be its main use, the robot will also assist in orthopaedic and trauma cases, such as pelvic operations. Hospital management emphasised that the investment aligns with a broader strategy to raise Wolfsburg's medical profile beyond the local area.
Funding came from both the city of Wolfsburg and the state, a contribution acknowledged by the hospital's managing director. The purchase reflects a push to modernise facilities and attract talent, including medical students and junior doctors. The Loop-X system is now operational at Wolfsburg Hospital, marking a first for German healthcare. Patients undergoing spine, orthopaedic, or trauma surgery will experience shorter, safer procedures with less radiation. The hospital's investment also signals its ambition to strengthen its reputation as a centre for advanced medical training.
