German Women Farmers Break Barriers in a Male-Dominated Industry

The Year of the Woman Farmer

Women in agriculture still face deep-seated prejudices, but change is in the air: despite countless challenges, more and more female farmers are taking over key areas of operations—or entire farms—and reshaping the industry. 2026 is their year to shine.

The Faces of Modern Farming Are Female Too

"What does it mean to be a woman farmer in 2026?" Through social media, female farmers have shared their thoughts with us. Now, it's time to give them a voice—and a face. These first women represent the diversity, passion, and sense of responsibility that define the profession today. They are the faces of a modern agriculture driven by innovation, sustainability, and sheer dedication. And many more will join them throughout the year.

Women play an indispensable role in farming—and their contributions are becoming more visible than ever. Increasingly, they are taking charge of diverse areas on farms or running agricultural businesses independently.

"Can I Speak to the Boss of the Farm?"

Despite the growing number of women leading farms, many still battle outdated stereotypes. In Germany, only about 11% of agricultural businesses are run by women—compared to roughly 45% in Latvia and Lithuania. Yet progress is being made: a decade ago, that figure stood at just 9%.

Why Change Comes Slowly

The sluggish pace of transformation is deeply rooted in traditional gender roles. Daughters often inherit the farm only if there is no son to take over. In many family businesses, the expectation remains that a daughter will find a partner to assume the role of "farmer." Access to critical resources—land and capital—also remains disproportionately difficult for women.

Young Women Launching Their Own Agricultural Ventures

More and more young women are breaking free from convention, pursuing agricultural training or degrees. They aspire to lead farms or strike out as entrepreneurs. The demand for female role models is rising—a trend that will only grow stronger with the next generation.

Women Carving Out New Paths in Agriculture

Beyond farm management, women are increasingly making their mark in other areas of agriculture. From operating heavy machinery to agricultural engineering and equipment services, their presence is expanding. The days when women were largely confined to barn work and office tasks are long gone.
