Menstrual Leave? Minister Relies on Sick Leave - German minister urges sick leave for women with severe menstrual pain
Andreas Philippi, the health and labour minister for Lower Saxony, has called for women suffering from severe menstrual pain to take sick leave. He argued that society must address the long-standing taboo around menstruation and its impact on daily life. Philippi currently holds the rotating presidency of Germany’s Conference of Health Ministers in 2023. His comments come ahead of the annual meeting of state ministers, scheduled for June in Hanover.
While he supports women using existing sick leave for debilitating period pain, he opposes the idea of introducing a specific 'period leave'. He warned that such a policy might increase stigma rather than reduce it. The minister also stressed the need for greater understanding among men. Recognising that menstrual pain can severely disrupt work and daily routines, he urged a shift in societal attitudes.
Philippi’s remarks highlight the ongoing debate about menstrual health in the workplace. His stance avoids a new legal category for period leave but pushes for broader acceptance of sick leave for severe symptoms. The issue will likely be discussed further at the upcoming health ministers’ meeting in Hanover.
