Freiburg's Orbital Center Earns Elite Certification for Rare Eye Disease Treatment
The Orbital Center at Freiburg University Medical Center has received a prestigious certificate for its treatment of endocrine orbitopathy. This rare autoimmune condition affects the eye socket and often appears alongside thyroid disorders like Graves' disease. The center is now one of only five in Germany to earn this recognition.
Endocrine orbitopathy causes symptoms such as redness, bulging eyes, and swollen eyelids. The condition requires specialised care, which the Freiburg center provides through close collaboration between experts in endocrinology, ophthalmology, and surgery.
The European Group on Graves' Orbitopathy (EUGOGO) awards certification to clinics meeting high standards in diagnosis and treatment. Alongside Freiburg, the other certified centers in Germany are located at the university hospitals in Essen, Göttingen, Munich (LMU), and Tübingen.
Patients at the Freiburg Orbital Center receive early intervention, including medication and reconstructive surgery. The certificate ensures that its treatments meet Europe-wide quality benchmarks.
With this accreditation, the Freiburg center joins a select group of facilities offering verified care for endocrine orbitopathy. The certification confirms its role in providing advanced, interdisciplinary treatment for patients across Europe.
