"We doctors are creatures of habit": How an AI dashboard should detect dangerous resistances earlier

Frankfurt Hospital Uses AI to Fight Antibiotic Resistance Crisis

Antibiotic resistance remains one of the biggest dangers to public health. To tackle the issue, Frankfurt University Hospital is developing an AI-powered dashboard for better antimicrobial management. The project, led by Chief Medical Information Officer Michael von Wagner, aims to improve how doctors prescribe and monitor treatments. The new system, built in partnership with analytics firm SAS, tracks antibiotic use and resistance patterns in real time. It currently runs on sample data at hospital and department levels but will switch to live analysis by the end of the year. Von Wagner compares the tool to a GPS, replacing outdated paper-based methods with precise, data-driven guidance.

The dashboard does more than monitor therapies. It spots trends, such as how increased use of a specific antibiotic class leads to higher resistance rates. Overprescription, misdiagnoses, and industrial livestock farming have all worsened the resistance crisis. Developing new drugs is not a lasting solution, as bacteria quickly adapt. Von Wagner’s goal is to expand the system to all doctors, including bedside use. The tool would provide instant alerts and tailored recommendations for individual patients. For the system to succeed, it must prove highly reliable to earn the trust of medical staff.

The AI dashboard is designed to curb unnecessary antibiotic use and slow resistance growth. By the end of 2024, it will operate with real-time hospital data. If adopted widely, the system could change how infections are treated and tracked across healthcare settings.
