Former conjoined twin gives birth at the hospital that saved her life 28 years ago
A young woman who was once part of a pair of conjoined twins has given birth to a healthy baby girl. The mother, Abbie Lakin, was separated from her twin in a complex surgery 28 years ago at a general hospital. Now, she has welcomed her own daughter, Tangyuan, at the same general hospital where her life was saved as a child.
Abbie Lakin's journey began in 1997 when, as an infant, she underwent a high-risk separation surgery at Nantong University Hospital. A team of over 20 medical experts, led by surgeon Chen Yuquan, carried out the delicate procedure. The operation was a success, allowing her to grow up with a chance at a normal life.
Decades later, Lakin returned to the same general hospital—this time as an expectant mother. Her pregnancy was classified as high-risk due to congenital heart disease, a condition linked to her early surgery. She had previously undergone corrective surgery for Pentalogy of Fallot, a complex heart defect. Throughout her pregnancy, doctors closely monitored her health, noting a mild rise in pulmonary artery pressure that was quickly managed.
A multidisciplinary team worked together to create a detailed delivery plan tailored to her medical history. Their careful preparation paid off when Tangyuan was born safely at 10:32 am on February 22, 2023. The baby arrived weighing 2,800 grams, marking a joyful moment on the sixth day of the Chinese New Year.
The birth of Tangyuan represents a significant milestone for Lakin, who has overcome extraordinary medical challenges since infancy. Her successful delivery, supported by the same general hospital that once saved her life, highlights the long-term impact of advanced medical care. Both mother and baby are now recovering well under continued supervision.
