Five children's toys recalled over dangerous asbestos contamination risks

Five children's products have been pulled from shelves after tests revealed unsafe levels of asbestos. The banned items, sold at major retailers like Hema, Woolworth and Aldi Süd, contained between 0.15 and 0.42 percent asbestos—well above the legal limit. Authorities are now investigating whether the contaminated sand poses broader health risks.

The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) identified the issue during routine testing. Among the 99 products examined, five were found to exceed the 0.1 percent asbestos threshold. These included Spiel- and Bastelsand from Hema, Creafun Sand Painting, Moxy Sand Painting Articles, Spielsandartikeln from Hobbycraft, and various Stretch-Spielfiguren (such as Stretcherz Dinos, Smash Car, and Slammerz) sold via Woolworth and Aldi Süd.

Another 29 products showed trace amounts of asbestos but remained within legal limits. The remaining 65 contained no detectable asbestos at all. The NVWA, alongside the National Institute for Public Health (RIVM), is now assessing potential health dangers linked to the contaminated sand.

The five banned products are no longer available for purchase. Shoppers who bought these items are advised to dispose of them safely. The ongoing risk assessment will determine if further action is needed to protect public health.
