Female doctors demand systemic change to close gender gaps in medicine

A network of female doctors is pushing for major changes in medical research and treatment. The Hartmannbund Network of Female Physicians argues that women often receive unequal care due to long-standing gaps in gender-sensitive medicine. For decades, many drugs were tested mostly on men, leaving women at higher risk of side effects and ineffective treatments.

The network highlights a persistent problem: historically, approved medications were primarily studied in male subjects. This has led to differences in how drugs work in women, who experience adverse reactions more often. Despite progress in some areas, such as cardiology, significant knowledge gaps remain.

Dr. Iris Illing, a spokesperson for the group, points out that treating women the same as men does not always mean fair or effective care. Dr. Wenke Wichmann adds that medical research must account for biological differences, social factors, and gender-specific risks. These should shape studies, clinical guidelines, and healthcare systems.

Dr. Galina Fischer, another network representative, stresses that women's health involves more than reproductive organs. All body systems need consideration. Yet, no country has introduced official national strategies for gender-sensitive medicine. The network insists this approach should become standard practice—not an afterthought.

The call for gender-sensitive medicine aims to close long-standing gaps in research and treatment. Without formal guidelines, the network warns, women will continue facing higher risks from medications and missed diagnoses. Their push for systemic change seeks to ensure fairer and more effective healthcare for all patients.
