European Carers Day spotlights the struggles of unpaid family caregivers

European Carers Day takes place every year on October 6. The event aims to highlight the challenges faced by unpaid caregivers across Europe. Organised by Eurocarers, a Belgian-based NGO, it pushes for better recognition and support for those looking after family members in need. The day was first introduced by Eurocarers to draw attention to the growing pressures on informal carers. In Germany alone, around 2.33 million people rely on family members for social care. A key demand for the event is the creation of community health nursing roles to ease the burden on relatives and strengthen healthcare systems.

Over the next decade, the date will fall on different days of the week. In 2025, 2031, and 2036, it lands on a Monday. A Sunday celebration is set for 2030, while 2029 and 2035 see it on a Saturday. The day moves to a Tuesday in 2026 and 2032, and in 2028 and 2034, it will be observed on a Friday. For 2027 and 2033, the event takes place on a Wednesday. The term 'care crisis' has gained traction in recent years due to a shortage of trained professionals in the sector. European Carers Day seeks to address this by encouraging national policies that support both paid and unpaid caregivers.

The annual event continues to push for meaningful change in how caregivers are supported. With millions relying on family members for care, the call for better resources and recognition remains urgent. Community health nursing roles are seen as a vital step toward improving the system for everyone involved.
