Mainstream films still portraying women as stereotypes: discussion

Dhaka Film Festival Spotlights Women Shaping Cinema's Future in 2026

The 12th Dhaka International Conference on Women in Cinema 2026 is currently underway as part of the 24th Dhaka International Film Festival. A key seminar, titled When Women Shape the Frame, brought together filmmakers and activists to discuss the evolving role of women in the industry. Organiser Niharika Nazz stressed the need to recognise women’s contributions beyond acting alone. The seminar was chaired by Farah Kabir of Action Aid Bangladesh. Speakers included Geraldine Villamil, Fatema Amin, and Ishrat Khan, who explored challenges and opportunities for women in filmmaking. Nazz argued that female filmmakers introduce balance and emotional depth to storytelling, countering long-standing stereotypes still seen in mainstream cinema.

Digital platforms, social media, and OTT services were highlighted as vital tools for women to showcase their work. Despite online harassment targeting women, these spaces remain crucial for raising voices and gaining visibility. The discussion also touched on artificial intelligence, which is opening fresh avenues for female creators in the industry.

The conference continues to address barriers and innovations in women’s filmmaking. New technologies and digital platforms are expanding opportunities, even as traditional stereotypes persist. Organisers hope the event will inspire greater inclusion and recognition for women shaping cinema’s future.
