Deadly New Year's blaze at Swiss ski resort leaves 40 dead and 119 injured

A devastating fire at the Crans-Montana ski resort on New Year's Day 2026 has left at least 40 people dead and 119 injured. Among the survivors, 20-year-old Danielo Janjic suffered severe burns to his face, hands and ears. He remains hospitalised in Sion, a town near the scene of the tragedy.

The blaze, which broke out in the early hours of 1 January, has led to the arrest of Jacques Moretti, the 49-year-old French operator of the Le Constellation bar. Authorities have charged him with negligent homicide, negligent bodily harm and negligent arson.

Janjic, a Bosnian-born Swiss who grew up near Crans-Montana, was among the many caught in the fire. Doctors have confirmed that while his injuries will heal over time with surgery, he will carry permanent scars. His emotional state has been volatile—moments of weakness, tears, anger and deep sadness have followed since the incident.

The fire claimed lives across age groups, with the youngest confirmed victim being a 14-year-old Swiss girl. Many of the deceased were teenagers and young adults, gathered to celebrate the new year. Moretti's wife, Jessica, was initially detained but later released without charges.

Investigations continue into the cause of the fire, which engulfed the crowded venue shortly after midnight. Authorities have not yet released further details on the conditions that led to the rapid spread of flames or the high number of casualties.

Janjic now faces a long recovery, both physically and emotionally. The fire has left lasting damage on survivors and families, with many still receiving treatment for serious injuries.

Moretti remains in custody as legal proceedings progress. The disaster has raised questions about safety measures at public venues, particularly during high-capacity events.
