Darmstadt's Klinikum defies Germany's declining birth rates with record deliveries
Germany’s birth rates dropped in 2025, but one hospital in Darmstadt bucked the trend. While national figures fell by 4.3 percent from January to October, the city’s Klinikum recorded its busiest year ever. A total of 2,779 babies were born there, marking a historic high for the facility. The hospital’s birth numbers climbed steadily over recent years. In 2023, it saw 1,900 deliveries, rising to 2,600 in 2024. By 2025, the figure jumped to 2,740, then reached 2,779—surpassing the previous record of 2,738 set in 2021.
Of the 2025 newborns, boys slightly outnumbered girls, making up 51 percent of deliveries. The year also included 45 sets of twins. The upward trend continued into 2026, with Mateo becoming the first baby born at the hospital on New Year’s Day. By midnight, nine more had arrived. While Germany’s overall birth rate declined, Darmstadt’s Klinikum maintained stable numbers. The hospital’s 2025 figures stood out as the highest in its history.
Darmstadt’s Klinikum now holds the record for its most births in a single year. The 2,779 deliveries in 2025 highlight a local rise, even as national figures dropped. With nine babies born on New Year’s Day alone, the hospital’s busy start to 2026 suggests the trend may continue.
