Charité and Schwarz Digits unite to revolutionize health data sharing

Charité University Hospital and Schwarz Digits have launched a joint venture to build a new health data platform. The project, called HIVEPRO, will pull together fragmented medical records from different hospital systems. Both organisations aim to make the information easier to access for clinical research and treatment.

The partnership takes the form of a new company, Schwarz Charité Health Data GmbH. Schwarz Digits holds a 75% share, while Charité retains the remaining 25%. The venture builds on earlier work by the HiGHmed Consortium, which has been developing ways to structure and share medical data across institutions since 2016.

HIVEPRO will run on STACKIT, the cloud infrastructure provided by Schwarz Digits. All data processing will stay within Germany, ensuring compliance with local regulations. Hospitals contributing to the platform will keep full ownership of their datasets, even as the system integrates records from different software providers. The HiGHmed Consortium has already shown that structured data consolidation is possible. However, details on how many hospitals have adopted similar approaches remain unclear. The new platform will focus on making medical information more usable without compromising institutional control.

The joint venture marks a step toward centralising health records while keeping data management in the hands of individual hospitals. HIVEPRO's launch follows years of research into cross-institutional data sharing. The platform will operate under German data protection rules, with processing handled domestically.
