Cecil County's only birthing center to close by June 30
Cecil County will lose its only local birthing centre when Union Hospital’s Family Birth Center closes on June 30th. The decision by ChristianaCare leaves expectant mothers, including first-time mum-to-be Kasey Conner, facing long journeys to alternative hospitals for labour and delivery. Union Hospital in Elkton, operated by ChristianaCare, announced the shutdown of its Family Birth Center, citing an aging population and ongoing workforce shortages. The closure will result in 31 job losses, including two doctors and 26 nurses.
Conner had planned to deliver at the centre and had already built relationships with the staff. Now, she must choose between Christiana Hospital in Delaware or Upper Chesapeake Hospital in Harford County—both far from home. Despite her concerns about unfamiliar surroundings, she has decided on Christiana Hospital for her delivery.
Cecil County Executive Adam Streight criticised ChristianaCare for failing to communicate the closure effectively. A public hearing to address the shutdown and explore possible solutions will take place on June 11th at 5 pm at the Comfort Inn in North East, Maryland. The closure removes the only local option for childbirth in Cecil County. Expectant mothers will now need to travel further for care, while 31 healthcare workers face unemployment. The upcoming hearing aims to discuss ways to address the gap left by the centre’s shutdown.
